It is the last day of our Home Tour! I’ve loved showing you where we do life together as a family. Today, I am ending the tour with the room design that started it all: Our Modern Navy and Pink Master Bedroom.
Our Master bedroom is the boldest room in terms of color. After I decided on Navy as the main foundational color of our home palette, I quickly started thinking about a room with navy walls. Almost every other room in our home has white walls, so I thought it would be fun to switch it up a little bit in the master. I was a tad fearful of painting every wall in the master suite navy, lest it turn into a dark cave (clearly I like light and bright!).
So I turned to my trusty Facebook Friends to poll them: Are accent walls a thing or totally not cool anymore?
Some were a hard no, but I got a few good pieces of advice in that conversation. An interior designer friend brought up the point that when you paint a room in a dark bold color, you have to be conscious of how many doors and windows you have that will awkwardly break up the flow with bright white trim and doors. Another friend brought up the reasonable point that it is far easier to start with one wall to see how I like it before painting every wall and regretting my decision.
In the end, I decided to take my chances and try the accent wall. I crossed my fingers and hoped my room wouldn’t look like a 90’s flashback, ha!
As for the color, I went with a shade of navy called Salty Dog by Sherwin Williams. For no rhyme or real reason.
You see, I have this little unconventional paint selection process: I don’t make it a process at all! Never have I ever bought a sample (or many samples) of paint to then paint little squares on my walls and pick which one looks best. I just look at the cards and pick the one that speaks the most to me and buy enough paint to not have to make a return trip!
You could call me a gamblin’ woman in the paint department. 😉
Salty Dog seemed like a pretty shade of navy and I liked the way it looked with the shade of white I went with, so that was that.
When we walked in the master for the first time after the painters finished the room, we LOVED the navy accent wall. The color was absolutely gorgeous and the surrounding white walls bounced pretty light in the room. And I loved it even more after filling the room with our things!
The Details: My favorite details in this room are the four art prints above our Target Bar Carts turned nightstands. They are watercolor birthstones painted by Jenna Alexander Art. We have four for each family member (and yes, I plan to get another for our baby due soon!). I really love when art meets meaning. Details for the sake of having details aren’t what make a home beautiful. Details that have special meaning do. <3
Our white pinched pleat comforter is from Target and the Nail Head Linen Upholstered Headboard was from Joss and Main. I searched HIGH and LOW for an affordable upholstered headboard with GOLD nail heads. Take it from me, as soon as you type in gold, the prices drastically increase. By hundreds of dollars. So I did what any budget-conscious DIYer would do: I bought the considerably less expensive version with silver nail heads and attacked them with a gold paint pen, ha! It took me about an hour to color each of the nail heads with gold paint, but the result was well worth it! #cheapatheart
Our dressers were passed down to us and were originally brown. I painted them with Amy Howard at Home chalk paint in Linen and spray painted the hardware gold. The desk was a vintage solid wood score on Facebook Marketplace that I painted in Amy Howard’s Bauhaus Buff. Our pink chair can be found at World Market and the navy, pink, and mustard rug is from Rugs USA.
It has been such a pleasure having you with us on our home tour! Thanks so much for stopping by. 🙂
I’m finishing up the girls’ room and the nursery for our newest arrival later this month and will be back soon to give you a peek!
I’ve gotten plenty of questions about how to design with all of this color and pattern, so I will be back tomorrow with some fun decorating tips, but until then, check out the rest of our home tour!
