A Bright Florida Colorful Dining Room

I am having so much fun showing you around our home in this week’s Home Tour Series! I’m back today to welcome you into our Bright Florida Colorful Dining Room! While our living room is my favorite of the house for doing life, this is my favorite room in terms of the actual design! Our dining room is a blend of old meets new and gets the most gorgeous natural light every evening. Come on in!

I’ve always wanted a big table to host dinners for family and friends. Our first two homes weren’t quite big enough to hold anything larger than a dining table for 6, so naturally, I was excited that this home had the potential for a larger table!

Our dining table is another one of our thrifted pieces of furniture. I have a special (read crazy) kinda determination when it comes to thrifting furniture. I tend to have a general idea of what I want and will then spend way too much time scouring Craigslist and the Facebook Marketplace until I can find the right fit. I knew I wanted a big chunky wood table, but didn’t want to spend an arm and a leg to get one of the dreamy tables you can find at retail stores.

After way too many search refreshes, I found this 8 person dining table on Facebook Marketplace for $200. Unreal. I bought it in its original oak wood finish knowing full well it was going to get a major facelift. But unlike every other painted piece of furniture we own, I didn’t want to be the one doing the refinishing. My original plan was to have the table sanded and restained in a gray wood tone and I am not experienced with wood staining. I called my sweet friend Vonna who is a restoring and refinishing wizard and hired her to take on the project.

About a week into the project, Vonna had some bad news. She had tried for days to stain the tabletop, but it just wasn’t coming out the same color as the legs. She turned to her father-in-law for advice and we found out that while the legs of the table are solid wood, the actual table top isn’t. It surprised even him since you could hardly tell the difference. Unfortunately, engineered wood does not take in wood stain the same way solid wood does, so we had to change the plan. I turned again to my trusty friend, chalk paint, and had Vonna work her magic with a mix of dark and light waxes so the table would have a more textured look to emulate a stained look.

And I love it! She did a fantastic job!

In true old meets new fashion, while I saved BIG time on our table, the large white shelves were a total splurge. I found them at Restoration Hardware Outlet and somehow convinced Jeremy to let me get them! Technically they are from the RH Teen line, but don’t tell anyone, mmkay? 😉 They look adult enough in here to me, ha!

The Details: Pretty much everyone asks me where the showstopper of a light fixture came from! I’ve got good news friend: It is a major steal at only $300 dollars from my friends at Lighting Connection! Lighting Connection is my favorite one stop shop for gorgeous light fixtures without the CRAZY price tag that most light fixtures boast. They sell a wide range of stunning light fixtures that make my gold loving heart skip a beat like the Geometric Cage Linear Pendant featured in our colorful dining room! I loved it so much that I also got its little sister, the Geometric Cage Lantern, for our kitchen nook (which you’ll see next week when our home tour continues!). If you spot a light fixture you love on Lighting Connection, be sure to use code MMCvip for $25 off any purchase over $100. Hooray!

The bamboo and wicker end chairs were a STEAL from Ross at $30 a pop! The White X back dining chairs were another Facebook Marketplace find. (Seriously, I have a problem!) We needed an additional table for our kitchen nook and 6 matching chairs for in here, so I set out to find a white dining room set. I scored both the white table and these chairs for $200. After months of deliberation, I finally decided on a preppy green and white fabric to recover their worn out cushions with. Once that was done, the dining room was complete!

Our white dishware is from Pottery Barn, the pink goblets are vintage (I found them on eBay!), and the green goblets were my mom’s! The navy and white jars and tassel curtains came from Home Goods and the gold accessories came from Target.
